Ximino and Breastfeeding

Ximino is known to pass through breast milk. Although short-term use is probably unlikely to cause significant problems, the manufacturer of the drug recommends that breastfeeding women not use Ximino at all. This drug has been shown to cause permanent tooth staining and possible problems with bone growth.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Ximino?

Ximino™ (minocycline hydrochloride) is a prescription tetracycline antibiotic approved to treat the red, inflamed, pus-filled bumps and pimples associated with moderate-to-severe acne. Ximino passes through breast milk. Although short-term use of the medication is generally thought to be safe while nursing, the risk of serious problems from prolonged use cannot yet be ruled out.

More Information on Ximino and Breastfeeding

When given to children younger than eight years of age, Ximino can cause permanent tooth staining, resulting in yellow-gray-brown teeth. In addition, problems with bone growth were observed when a similar antibiotic (tetracycline) was given to premature infants. In theory, a nursing infant could be exposed to enough medication during breastfeeding to cause these problems.

The short-term use of Ximino is unlikely to be harmful. This is because the amount of Ximino found in breast milk is low. In addition, the calcium in breast milk is thought to bind to Ximino, limiting the amount absorbed from the infant's digestive tract (this is the reason Ximino should not be taken with calcium-containing products).

However, long-term use would increase an infant's exposure, theoretically increasing the risk for problems. Ximino is generally used for 12 weeks to treat acne. Because of the potential risk to a nursing infant, the manufacturer of Ximino recommends that women avoid taking this medication while breastfeeding.

In addition to the possible effects on tooth color, Ximino may cause diarrhea, thrush, or diaper rash in a nursing infant. Therefore, if your healthcare provider recommends taking this drug while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for these possible symptoms in your nursing child.
