Generic Veltin

Generic Veltin (clindamycin/tretinoin gel) is currently protected by a patent that prevents any generic versions from being made. The earliest date a generic version may become available is November 2014, when the first patent expires. However, it's likely that the introduction of generic versions will be delayed, due to additional patents or exclusivity rights. Ziana gel, a similar medication, is not technically interchangeable with Veltin.

Can I Buy Generic Veltin?

Veltin™ (clindamycin/tretinoin gel) is a prescription skin medication approved for the treatment of acne. It is a combination medication that contains a "retinoid" and an antibiotic. It is applied just once daily at bedtime.

Veltin is made by DPT Laboratories, Ltd., for Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Veltin from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Veltin currently expires in November 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available. However, some Veltin products have additional patents or exclusivity rights that extend much later. It is not yet clear how much protection against generic competition these additional patents or exclusivity rights may provide.

In addition, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Veltin uses.

What About Ziana Gel?

Ziana® gel is a similar clindamycin/tretinoin gel that is also available by prescription only. Although Ziana and Veltin are similar, they are both brand-name products and are not technically interchangeable. Veltin is not a generic version of Ziana, and vice versa.
