More Info on Minocin Indications

Minocin for Acne

Minocin may be helpful for people with severe acne. It is thought to help control acne by curbing the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation.

How Does It Work?

Minocin belongs to a class of drugs called tetracyclines. It decreases bacteria's ability to make protein, which bacteria need to live. This activity does not directly kill the bacteria, but it does inhibit their growth and multiplication, which gives the immune system a chance to fight the infection.

Using Minocin in Children

This drug is not approved for use in children and definitely should not be used in children under the age of 8 years old. Permanent discoloration and altered development of teeth has been reported in children younger than 8 years old who have used tetracyclines, such as Minocin.

Off-Label Uses of Minocin

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Minocin for treating something other than the conditions listed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Sometimes, this medication is used off-label for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Minocycline is used for this purpose for its anti-inflammatory properties (not for its antibacterial properties).
