Generic Fabior

Fabior (tazarotene foam) is protected by exclusivity rights that prevent companies from making generic versions. However, after the exclusivity rights expire in 2015, it may be possible for a generic Fabior product to be manufactured and sold. This date may change if lawsuits or patents for other uses are filed. Although tazarotene is considered a "generic name" for Fabior, it is not a generic version.

Can I Buy Generic Fabior?

Fabior® (tazarotene foam) is a prescription skin medication used to treat acne in people age 12 and older. It comes in the form of a foam and belongs to a group of medications known as retinoids.
Fabior is made by DPT Laboratories, Ltd., for Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. It is currently under the protection of exclusivity rights that prevent any generic Fabior from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The exclusivity rights (which are similar to patents, but not exactly the same) for Fabior expire in May 2015. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for new Fabior uses. Once the drug goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Fabior drug.

Is Tazarotene a Generic Fabior?

No -- tazarotene is the active ingredient in Fabior (as well as in a few other medications), but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
