Epiduo
® (
adapalene/benzoyl peroxide) is a prescription medication used to treat acne. It comes in the form of a gel that is applied directly to the skin.
Who Makes This Medication?
This medication is made by Galderma Production Canada, Inc., and marketed by Galderma Laboratories, L.P.
Retinoids are chemically related to
vitamin A. Some other well-known retinoids include Retin-A
® and
Accutane®.
Retinoids are thought to work by suppressing inflammation and slowing down the rapid growth of skin cells. Benzoyl peroxide is thought to kill acne-causing bacteria, and to help soften and remove the outer layer of the skin. By combining these two medications, Epiduo treats current pimples while also helping to prevent new ones from occurring.
Clinical Effects of Epiduo
In clinical studies, Epiduo was shown to improve acne in people age 12 years old and older. In these studies, people with acne were given one of the following products to use for 12 weeks:
- Epiduo (a combination of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide)
- Adapalene alone
- Benzoyl peroxide alone
- A "placebo" gel that did not contain any active ingredients.
Most of the people in the studies had moderate acne to start with, which means they had pimples on over half of their face. After 12 weeks, more people using Epiduo had clear or almost clear skin compared to people using the other treatments.
