Doryx® (
doxycycline hyclate delayed release) is a prescription antibiotic approved to treat and prevent a number of different conditions. Healthcare providers will often prescribe it for
acne treatment.
This medication may be helpful for people with severe acne. It is thought to help control acne by curbing the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation. Doryx is usually better tolerated (usually with a lower risk of dangerous side effects) compared to
minocycline (
Minocin®), a similar antibiotic sometimes prescribed for acne treatment.
Doryx tablets are unique in that they contain "enteric coated" pellets of doxycycline. This coating prevents the medication from dissolving in the stomach, where it might cause stomach upset. Instead, the medication dissolves in the small intestine, where it is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream.
