An Overview of Your Doryx Dosage
The dose of
Doryx® (
doxycycline hyclate delayed release) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- The medical condition being treated
- Your weight (for children)
- Other medications you may be taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Doryx Dosing for Bacterial Infections
The recommended dose of Doryx for most types of bacterial infections in adults is 100 mg to 200 mg per day for 7 to 14 days. For chronic (long-term) or more serious infections, longer treatment may be required.
In children ages eight or older, your healthcare provider will prescribe a Doryx dose based on the child's weight, usually about 1 to 2 mg per pound of body weight per day. The dose is taken for 7 to 14 days. Children weighing more than 100 pounds should receive the standard adult dosage. Because Doryx is available in limited strengths (75, 100, and 150 mg tablets), it may not be appropriate for some children.
Doryx Dosage for Malaria Prevention
The recommended dose of Doryx for preventing
malaria in adults is 100 mg daily. For children, the dosage is 2 mg per kilogram of body weight (about 0.9 mg per pound), not to exceed 100 mg per day. Treatment should begin a day or two prior to travel, taken throughout your stay in the area of concern, and continued for 28 days after you have left the noted area. Usage should not exceed four months.
