Is Differin Safe for Pregnant Women?

If you are expecting a child and are considering using Differin® (adapalene) for acne treatment, you may be wondering, "Is Differin safe for pregnant women?" Although the full risks of using this medication are not known at this time, animal studies have shown that this medication does not appear to be particularly dangerous during pregnancy.

When this medication was given orally to pregnant rats (at doses equivalent to 25 times the exposure seen with human use on the skin), it did not cause any problems. However, extremely high doses caused a variety of different birth defects in rats and rabbits. Because of this, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified Differin as a pregnancy Category C medicine. This means that a healthcare provider may prescribe Differin during pregnancy if he or she believes the benefits outweigh the risks.
