Azelex and Breastfeeding
No studies have been done on Azelex (azelaic acid cream) and breastfeeding, so it's unknown if the drug passes through breast milk. Because it comes in the form of a skin cream and very little medicine actually reaches the bloodstream, it is probably unlikely that Azelex would be passed through breast milk in high enough amounts to cause problems.
At this time, it is unknown if Azelex® (azelaic acid cream) passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider before using Azelex.
No research has been done to see if Azelex passes through breast milk. However, with normal use, only a small amount of the medication is absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, very little, if any, would likely be passed through breast milk.
It is important to note that applying Azelex on the skin does not appear to increase the blood levels of azelaic acid beyond the normal range (it is normal to find azelaic acid in the blood, as this compound is found naturally in wheat, barley, and rye).
However, potential problems cannot yet be ruled out. As with most skin medications, it is best to avoid applying Azelex to the breast or nipple where an infant might be directly exposed to the drug.
You should discuss breastfeeding and Azelex use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
