Veltin Acne Medication Information

VeltinTM (clindamycin/tretinoin gel) is a prescription skin cream used for the treatment of acne. It comes in the form of a gel and is typically used once a day, just before bedtime. Veltin is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and any other drugs you are taking before prescribing this acne medication.

Veltin contains two different active ingredients: clindamycin and tretinoin. Tretinoin (a type of retinoid) is thought to work by suppressing inflammation and slowing rapid skin cell growth. Clindamycin (an antibiotic) interferes with the ability of bacteria to make proteins; this makes it harder for the bacteria to grow and multiply.

Most people are able to use Veltin without any problems. However, as with any drug, side effects are possible. In clinical studies, the most common side effects included:

  • Dry skin
  • Irritation
  • Skin scaling or peeling.
