The prescription drug Solodyn® (minocycline hydrochloride) is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acne in people age 12 and older. In particular, it is used for acne that causes red, inflamed, pus-filled bumps. The medicine comes in tablet form and is generally taken once a day.
As a tetracycline drug, Solodyn works primarily by interfering with bacteria's ability to make protein, which keeps the bacteria from growing and multiplying. It may also work to treat acne in ways that are not quite clear. Before beginning treatment with Solodyn, inform your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medicines you are taking -- including supplements.
