Generic Acanya

There is currently no generic version of Acanya (clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide) available. The first patent has already expired, so it is possible that brand-name Acanya is still protected by one or more other patents. The next patent is set to expire in March 2015.

Can I Buy Generic Acanya?

Acanya® (clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide) is a topical prescription acne treatment. It contains clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide, and is approved to treat mild-to-severe acne.

Acanya is made by Contract Pharmaceuticals Limited for Coria Laboratories. It is currently under the protection of patents that prevent any generic Acanya from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Acanya expired in February 2012. However, the drug is not yet available in generic form. Most likely, this means that one or more other, later-expiring patents are still protecting the medication from generic competition. The next Acanya patent is set to expire in March 2015. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Acanya uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Acanya drug.

Is Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide a Generic Acanya?

No -- clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide are the active ingredients in Acanya, but are not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
